Hey, guys. This is the post that I promised to make about history, partly as a considered response to this, but as a note of warning: I am not a professional. I am a master’s student of the history of literature, film, and culture, that is true, but I am a long, long way from from being an academic. This is a personal essay; an essay about why I love history, because history shouldn’t be oppressive, even though it often has been. This post explicitly talks about almost all forms of historical oppression, so if that is something that triggers you, please don’t read this. Please let me know, too, if I have said something problematic, I am more than willing to admit that I, too, always have room to learn. (Lots of it, as it happens.) I am considering making a post as a sequel to this about people who do not like facing the realities of history, especially when represented in media, but, well. We’ll see. On with the show.

how to cut down on an enormous chunk of illegal downloading, and this is so absurdly simple that it boggles the mind:

• make your show / movie / whatever accessible online. 
• put ads on it so you can make money off of it, or sell a subscription to a competitive streaming service like netflix.
• make it available
• everywhere, meaning the country of origin and everywhere else
• as soon as it airs (tv shows) / becomes legally available to purchase (films &cet).  not a week and a half later, not three days later, not the next morning.  as soon as.   people who are savvy about internet downloading and things are generally going to be the sort of people who hang out online and want to talk about their favorite shows as soon as they happen with their friends who are in that timezone/country.  you’ll cut down on a shitton of downloading if you just make things available legally faster.
• square yourselves with the idea that in this age of high definition and internet streaming that seeing a film in a cinema is a premium service and should not be relied upon as a primary method of distribution.

There are lots of reasons we’re excited to be launching the Obama 2012 campaign’s new Tumblr today. But mostly it’s because we’re looking at this as an opportunity to create something that’s not just ours, but yours, too.

We’d like this Tumblr to be a huge collaborative storytelling effort—a place for people across the country to share what’s going on in our respective corners of it and how we’re getting involved in this campaign to keep making it better.

It’s possible because of Tumblr’s submission feature.

You can send us a few paragraphs about how your latest phonebanking gig went or why you’re in for 2012. Share the latest chart you saw that made you go “woah.” Ask a question. Upload a photo of 2012 t-shirts or signs you see out in the wild. Pass along jokes, particularly if they’re funny. And if you’re among the Tumbl-inclined, send us posts you’ve published on your own Tumblr that we should look at re-blogging.
